2 Kings 4:38-44

Today's Passage: 2 Kings 4:38-44

MIRACLES! They are absolutely everywhere in the Old Testament. So much so that I wonder if we don’t discredit them because of how frequent they are. In this passage alone, God is using miracles to teach us about Himself: God provides!

Even in the midst of a deep famine (v. 38), God continues to show His unlimited resources. He is not only the author of the famine, He is also the sustainer inside of it. What nature deemed unfit for them to eat (v. 39-40), God (through Elisha) provided. A lil’ bit of flour (and the healing power of the God who gave it)  and the sons of the prophets were able to eat.

If you don’t know your Bible well (and that’s ok, keep grinding until you know it better!), it’s easy to think that Jesus feeding the 5000 and 4000 were the only times in which a prophet took a little bread and made a feast with it. God did it here too, and despite the present doubt (v. 43), God again provided for them.

Don’t you see what God is using Elisha to teach us? He has all we need. The God of miracles doesn’t fret or get anxious in thinking through how to provide for His own. It flows out of the abundance of His nature and power. Miracles aren’t hard for God, and you are not exempt from His endless provision.

It doesn’t mean famines won’t come. It doesn’t mean we won’t ever be without. It does mean we can rest in hope that the God who has it is able to give it to those who need it.

What do you need from God?
What do you lack that He has?

Here’s an even better thought: not only does God HAVE all we need, He IS all we need. He is our daily bread. He is our sustenance. He alone satisfies like no loaf of ordinary bread can; for Jesus is the bread of life.

Trust Him. Ask Him. Believe in Him. Run to Him. Rest in Him.

“And they ate had had some left, according to the word of the LORD.” (v. 44)
