1 Kings 17:1-7

Today's Passage: 1 Kings 17:1-7

I read somewhere that a child’s imagination begins to decline around 5 or 6 years of age. Not that it disappears altogether, but it slows down in wonder. This is one of the greatest detriments to reading our Bible: we have lost the wonder and awe of imagining a miracle working God.

Today’s passage is a jumpstart (Ha, get it?!) to reclaim that wonder as we see an incredible miracle of provision over the prophet Elijah. Prophets clearly had a different level of interaction with God than layman as they were raised up as mouthpieces for God and interacted directly with the voice of God. (That doesn’t make Elijah more special than us since we are all recipients of salvation and bear the image of God, but this story is incredible).

After Elijah predicts a drought, God spoke directly to him and told him to “depart from here and turn eastward and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. You shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.” (v. 3-4)

If I heard that, my natural inclination would be to ask God to repeat Himself. “Huh? Come again? Did you say birds are going to feed me?” YES! And they did. Think with me about the incredible amount of supernatural activity God reveals in this passage.

Dominion over rulers.
Elijah spoke to Ahab, a wicked king of Israel who had every power and authority to snuff Elijah out if he wanted to. Yet, Ahab could never go more than God allowed.

Dominion over nature.
The drought that Elijah predicted happened, and it was a terrible season for the people. Even though Elijah spoke of it, God is the one who had the power to carry it out.

Dominion over animals.
Dr. Doolittle over here telling the birds what to do. I love how it is mentioned that God “commanded” the ravens, as if they ever had a choice in the matter. They bow to the King of creation and submit to His instruction as a way to glorify Him.

Have you lost confidence in the God who wields this power? Not that He will make literal ravens feed you, but still, do you trust His ability to provide? Will you listen to his instruction and trust His hand, even if you don’t agree or understand the purpose?

Stories like these are meant to engage our minds with the wonder-working power of the same God who did it back then. With childlike faith, believe that God CAN. He still owns the ravens today, so why not look to Him as your trust?
