1 John 5:1-12
Today's Passage: 1 John 5:1-12
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will
have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.†/ John 16:33
What does it look like to overcome the world? How can we be sure that we have
hope? These are big questions of life. These may be THE questions of life. But John in 1
John 5 makes it clear.
We may try all sorts of ways to overcome the world and achieve peace but there is
only one way... through Jesus Christ. As we love God... As we keep His
commandments... If we have given Jesus our heart... we have overcome the world. The
end of the story has been written. Jesus wins.
Who overcomes the world? Those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God. Why?
Because Jesus has overcome the world in who He is and what He has accomplished.
How do we know that Jesus is truly God’s Son?
As C.S. Lewis is quoted in saying... Jesus is either a (1) Liar (2) Lunatic or (3) Lord. There
is no middle ground. The Scriptures clearly proclaim who Jesus is, the design of God
for our life, and where/how we have hope.
11 And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12
Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have
life. / 1 John 5:11-12
Is this where your hope is found? Are you living daily in the truth of who Jesus is and
who He has made you if you have turned to Him in repentance for forgiveness?
How do you overcome things of this world? Navigate all the things you are walking
through? Rest in who Jesus is. He is the Son of God. The Savior of the world. And
your Savior if you have called on His name.

2) It is the testimony of the Holy Spirit (v.6-8)
3) It is the testimony of Jesus Himself (John 10)

6) It is the testimony of Jesus death & resurrection (v.6, 8)
