Deuteronomy 32

Today's Passage: Deuteronomy 32

I wrote a love song to Jennifer when we were in college. It was bad, but she loved it. Even today, she will mention some of the lyrics I wrote over 20 years ago because they stuck with her. (Don’t ever ask to hear it. I won’t budge. 🙂)

Moses writes a song to the LORD. It contains some really precious lyrics/thoughts that would be good for our hearts too. Here are a few lines that stuck out to me:

v. 3: For I will proclaim the name of the LORD; ascribe greatness to our God.
God is incredible and great. Why/how would we NOT proclaim it?

v. 4b: A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he.
A good reminder of God’s holiness. He does all He does with perfection!

v. 9: But the LORD’s portion is his people, Jacob is His allotted heritage.
Of all the things God has, His most precious and valuable possession is people. What a thought!

v. 18: You were unmindful of the Rock that bore you, and you forgot the God who gave you birth.
May we never forget our Creator and sustainer. God is our beginning and our end.

v. 35: Vengeance is mind, and recompense, for the time when their foot shall slip.
God isn’t ignorant or unaware. He knows all things and will, in time, make all things come into the light.

v. 39: See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me…
YES! PREACH! All other gods are idols; only One is true and real.

And as Moses brings this song to a close (and in fact his life comes to a close), he commands Joshua to keep these words before the generations and obey what God has laid forth.

I would encourage you to comb back through this song and see which lyrics minister to your heart, like I did above. While you do, consider these few questions as a rubric:

Where do you see the character of God in this song?
Where do you see the power of God in this song?
Where do you see the heart of God in this song?

Meditate on them. Praise God for them. Remember them, as Moses said to Joshua, that our hearts might not drift toward other loves.
