2 Samuel 10

Today's Passage: 2 Samuel 10

Famous singer/songwriter Frank Sinatra wrote an infamous song entitled “I Did It My Way.” Here is the second verse to this song.

Regrets, I've had a few

But then again too few to mention

I did what I had to do

I saw it through without exemption

I planned each charted course

Each careful step along the byway

And more, much, much more

I did it, I did it my way

As 2 Samuel 10 unfolds and we see the princes of the Ammonites conspire against David (whose intentions were pure), there is certainly a touch of Sinatra all over their plan. Having embarrassed the Israelites by leaving them half-shaven and half-naked, the Ammonites continued their ploy to overthrow David by sending an army to defeat him.

On the contrary, Joab, the commander of the army of Israel developed a defense plan to protect themselves against this onslaught. What is extremely important to note is Joab’s heart in the middle of this plan as he states in verse 12: “Be of good courage, and let us be courageous for our people, and for the cities of our God, and may the LORD do what seems good to Him.

What a difference in motive! One army exclaimed, “I’ll do it my way” while another submitted, “Let God do it His way.

Is there some Sinatraism (yes, I made that up) within you? A touch of an attitude that says, “I’ll do it my way” instead of submitting to the better plans and purposes of God? See, Frank Sinatra either didn’t know or didn’t remember the words of Proverbs 16:9 that states: “The heart of a man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”

Is there a looming decision ahead of you that offers temptation to do it your way instead of God’s way? Heed the heart of Joab; let God decide what’s best. Our primary job isn’t to figure things out or to fix them, it is to trust and obey a faithful and benevolent Father.

At the end of the day, let’s change our heart song lyrics to say: “I did, I did it HIS way.” It’s always better.

How have you seen God prove that His way is better in your life?
What decision do you need to lay down today and surrender to the perfect purposes of God?
