Nehemiah 2

Nehemiah 2

The beginning of Nehemiah 2 shows that four months have passed since he learned of the state of his people and of Jerusalem. It is implied that he is continually praying and planning during this period of time.

Nehemiah has anticipated a discussion with King Artaxerxes and has been praying about it for months. Nehemiah knows that in order for his request of the king to be granted, God will have to move Artaxerxes’ heart. He also knows that he needs to be prepared for when God gives him an opportunity. Nehemiah obviously thought through a strategy for this massive project, and even had details to present to the king and queen.

Why was Nehemiah convinced that the will of God was for Jerusalem to be rebuilt? He knew God intimately, knew His character, and was aware of the repentant hearts of God’s people. He trusted that God would intervene because of His promise to gather His people again if they return to Him and keep His commandments (Deuteronomy 4:25-31; 28:63-65; 30:1-5).

I love this chapter because it shows a faithful man relying on God and taking steps of obedience based on what he believed was God’s will. He waited patiently, prayed continually, and planned tediously. He acted while also being fully aware of the fact that he could not succeed without the Lord.

How often and for what do you fervently pray? Do you know God, His character, and His commands? What is one way you could take a step of obedience today, even if you’re in a season of waiting?

Very good analysis Caitlin. Nehemiah had a plan to restore the walls and city which is God's city. Jeremiah knew to plan and seek God for everything, knew it was God's will and also knew God would guide his every step. Proverbs 16:9
