2 Kings 25

Today's Passage: 2 Kings 25

Have you ever found yourself in a place so difficult, so seemingly dark, that you don’t
know how God is going to use it in your life? That you feel hopeless?

No doubt, this is how the people of Judah felt at this moment in 2 Kings 25. The
prophets have been foretelling the coming exile to Babylon and it is finally here.

Babylon, some of the most evil people they can think of, come. They break down their
walls. They tear down the temple. They burn the cities. They take the people captive.
All hope seems lost.

As a reminder for you, this is consequence and discipline for their sin, yet God had a
plan in it to bring good.

Have you ever found yourself in exile? Whether because of your sin or someone else's?
Here is the hope that you can have in exile... (1) God is with you; presence (2) God is in
control; nothing can come into your life without passing over the desk of God and (3)
God has a purpose; hope.

We see this come to fruition in the end of 2 Kings 25. A new king in Babylon comes to
power and for whatever reasons decides to treat Jehoiachin, king of Judah, with
kindness. He allows him more comfortable conditions. He feeds him better. And most
importantly he doesn’t kill him.

Why is this important? Because if you fast forward to Matthew 1:12; Jechoniah (another
name for Jehoiachin) is named in the lineage of Jesus. God had a plan to redeem His
people from their slavery and bondage, not just to Babylon but to their sin. God always
has a plan and a purpose in the dark.

We can take hope in this. We can trust Him. We can look to Him. We can rest in Him.

If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” 12 even
the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light
with you. / Psalm 139:11-12

10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you
to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish
you. / 1 Peter 5:10

28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good,[h] for
those who are called according to his purpose. / Romans 8:28
