2 Kings 23

Today's Passage: 2 Kings 23

YES! Finally! What God had longed for among all the kings was starting to happen. All the hidden history of God and His faithfulness had been rediscovered by the young king Josiah and was once again being woven into the fabric of Israel.

Josiah reads the covenant of God to the people. (v. 2)
Josiah makes a covenant with the LORD to walk in His ways. (v. 3)
Josiah destroys all objects of idol worship. (v. 4,6, 11-16,19)
Josiah removed all priests of other gods. (v. 5,8,20)
Josiah rid the land of prostitution. (v. 7)
Josiah restores the Passover (v. 21-23)
Josiah purified the land from witchcraft (v. 24)

Josiah was one of a kind (v. 25), and it is incredible that God used a child-king to do it. We could learn a lot from Josiah and from Jesus’ instruction that child-like faith is His preferred standard of trust.

Even though this did not stop God’s wrath from burning against Judah (v. 26-27), it was a massive step in the right direction for Israel. So perhaps we could strive for the same things in our personal lives:

  • Commitment to the word of God
  • Commitment to obedience
  • Commitment to reject idolatry
  • Commitment to stay pure
  • Commitment to remember the Lamb’s blood

Jesus too was a child-King who came to restore what has been lost among the people. He tore down the generational curses of sin and shame in His own body, satisfying the wrath of God fully so that anyone who turns to Him will be saved.

I’m grateful for Josiah and what he did for Israel, but I’m even more grateful for Jesus and what He’s done for me. Defeating my sin. Tearing down any hostility that existed between me and God. Becoming the Passover Lamb and satisfying God’s wrath.

I LOVE the gospel and the message it brings. Thank you God for sending Jesus, the greater Josiah, to do what only He could do. That’s my King. Is He yours too?
