2 Kings 18

Today's Passage: 2 Kings 18

The life and story of Hezekiah has been near and dear to me recently. As I have spent
personal time with God and in His Word, my reading plan has had me reading a lot
about Hezekiah. He was a great king in Judah. He was a righteous King, yet not a
perfect one. But He genuinely loved, feared, and honored God in a way that is stirring
to me.

Here is what sticks out to me about Hezekiah’s story the most: MAKE FEARING GOD
THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY OF YOUR LIFE.

Hezekiah began to reign when he was 25 years old and he reigned for 29 years (v.1-2).
His dad was King Ahaz. He was an evil king. He did not follow God or His
commandments. He probably learned how to obey God from others in his life or from
the life of His grandfather Jotham (2 Kings 15).

Again, one thing that characterized Hezekiah was a fear of God. He wanted God to
have the pure worship He deserved.

  • He removed the high places.
  • He broke the pillars
  • He cut down the Asherah.
  • He broke the bronze serpent.

All of this had to do with idol worship. He said, “Enough is enough.” This was very
much a line drawn in the sand by a leader.

Look at how He is described:

  • He trusted God.
  • He held fast to the Lord.
  • He did not depart.
  • He kept the commandments.
  • God was with Him.
  • He prospered.

More than being successful, or wealthy, or intelligent, or well spoken... My prayer is
that they cry of our heart is that we would be known by the way Hezekiah was -
Faithful & Fearful.

BUT HE WASN’T PERFECT.

When the King of Assyria came beating down his door, in fear, he compromised. He
gave him gold and silver from the house of the Lord thinking it would be enough to
appease him. When it wasn’t the king spoke out against Yahweh and this is when
Hezekiah came to his senses. He did not respond because he knew and feared
Yahweh.

PART OF GOD’S DESIGN FOR YOUR LIFE IS THAT YOU WOULD FEAR HIM.

How can you grow in your fear & reverance for God today? How can you walk with God
closer? How can you honor Him in your life?
