2 Kings 10

Today's Passage: 2 Kings 10

Everybody seems to want to leave a legacy. But just because you’re remembered and even written down in history doesn’t mean the legacy you left was a good one.

Consider Jehu in today’s reading, He did a lot of things considered both horrible and honorable.
From the slaughtering of all of Ahab’s descendants to the ruthless murder of Ahaziah’s kin, to the striking down of the prophets of Baal, there is a lot to recount in Jehu’s reign.

We all probably have mixed emotions to his decision making. There are even some deeper theological things that are going on here that we don’t have time to consider in a Jumpstart.

Here’s what we need to see, despite our interpretation of whether or not what Jehu did was honorable:

v. 29: But Jehu did not turn aside from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin…

v. 30: And the LORD said to Jehu, because you have done well in carrying out what is right in my eyes (there’s that theological tension I mentioned above),and have done to the house of Ahab according to all that was in my heart, your sons of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne.”

v. 31: But Jehu was not careful to walk in the law of the LORD, the God if Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn from the sins of Jeroboam, which he made Israel to sin.

Right or wrong, good deeds or bad, at the end of the day it comes down to the heart. Although much of what Jehu did was by command of God, his own personal command center was never fully aligned to God’s purposes.

Leaving a legacy is much more than action; it’s heart. Some of the most honorable characters in Biblical history were the ones who followed the statues of God, for that is far more important than accomplishing tasks.

Is your heart FULLY aligned to God? Do you want to serve and follow Him above all else? Do you understand that the true legacy you’ll leave to the fourth generation is how you loved God and loved people?

Don’t be like Jehu, be like Jesus. He obeyed. He followed His Father. He resigned all to please God. May we strive to do the same, for Jesus’ legacy is way better to engage with than our own.

Serve God and be forgotten.
