1 Kings 18

Today’s Passage: 1 Kings 18

In our passage today we have an epic showdown between the prophets of Baal and
Elijah. There are things to learn about God as well as application points to make to our
lives. Here is a breakdown of today’s events:

  • Elijah, the prophet of God, confronts Ahab, the wicked king.
  • Elijah challenges the prophets of Baal to a challenge saying “let the better God win” and “If the LORD is God, follow Him” (v.21)
  • The challenge was to call down fire and consume an offering.
  • The prophets of Baal tried all day and could do nothing.
  • Elijah, in fear and reverance, built the altar and called out to God.
  • God consumed the altar with fire proving who He is.
  • The prophets of Baal are slaughtered.

Again, this is an epic showdown where we see God for who He is & what He does.

1) God is the only God.
2) God is an all powerful God.
3) God’s validity is not determined based on a quantity of followers.
4) God responds to humble worship.
5) God is a just God.
6) God alone is deserving of worship.

Here are some ideas on how that applies to our lives.

1) The crowd is not always right. Be careful who you are following.
2) Be willing to stand alone for what is right.
3) Guard what is receiving your worship.
4) If God is God, choose to follow Him with everything.
5) Trust God to provide over what you see and what you feel.

This is a powerful story about the might and the power of God. God is immutable. He
is unchanging. This is still the God that we serve today. When you look around the
world it is easy to be discouraged but stand tall, even if you stand alone. God is worthy
of all of it.

How do you need to take a step in your relationship with Jesus? How do you need to
grow? How do you need to plug in?
