1 Kings 10
Today's Passage: 1 Kings 10
Chapter 10 is a historical account of the Queen of Shiba meeting King Solomon. This encounter leaves her speechless at Solomon’s wisdom and the glory of his kingdom. It is worth noting how God’s wisdom shines through his servants, His blessings overflow his servants, and His witness goes forth through his servants.
The Queen of Sheba sought out Solomon for his wisdom. She shared everything on her mind and “there was nothing hidden from the king that he could not explain to her” (V3). The wisdom of the Lord worked through King Solomon — so much so that other kings, queens, and royalty traveled to glean from this wisdom.
As Christians, we know where the true source of wisdom lies, with God. Therefore we should be seeking it like fine gold and it should be clear to the world that we possess something truly beautiful - divine wisdom (Prov 2:4). Are you seeking the Lord’s wisdom and is it shining through your life?
Second, God’s material blessings are overflowing in Solomon’s kingdom. Silver was as common as stones (v. 27), can you imagine that kind of wealth as a nation? Following God is not a guarantee of material prosperity (the life of Jesus proved that), but it is a guarantee of spiritual blessings. When we pursue life in a way that honors God and worships him, we get to experience life in abundance (Jn 10:10). We get to experience the riches of deep/meaningful relationships, community, and purpose which are all rooted in Christ.
Unfortunately, we can often overlook these riches because of a lack of material blessings. As believers, we must zoom out to an eternal perspective and see the greater ways in which God has blessed us.
Finally, God’s witness goes forth through Solomon. Nations are seeking his wisdom and counsel. The nation of Israel was known as God’s people and their obvious prosperity was evidence of God’s blessing. The whole chapter screams of God’s glory. What about your life? Is there obvious evidence that you have been transformed by Jesus — that you’re not the same person you were before? Our lives should be the testimony of God’s power and love towards sinners. If it’s not, then it is mostly likely because we are choosing to live like the world rather than Jesus. Are there areas of your life that need to be changed to truly be a witness for God?
