1 Kings 7
Today’s Passage: 1 Kings 7
As we dive into 1 Kings 7 we see two main things happening… (1) Solomon building his
palace and (2) the furnishing of the Temple. I think that this passage is an important
one… especially knowing the end of Solomon’s story.
Though it is not mentioned explicitly in the text I believe this is the first time we see
SOLOMON’S DIVIDED HEART.
37 In the fourth year the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid, in the month of
Ziv. 38 And in the eleventh year, in the month of Bul, which is the eighth month, the
house was finished in all its parts, and according to all its specifications. He was
seven years in building it…….. Solomon was building his own house thirteen years, and
he finished his entire house. // 1 Kings 6:37-7:1
7 YEARS FOR THE TEMPLE.
13 YEARS FOR HIS HOUSE.
Clearly, God does not condemn us for having homes, cars, or even enjoying the life
that He has given us BUT knowing what we know about the end of Solomon’s story:
I can’t help but think that this is one of the first dominos to fall. (1) Not giving the
building of the temple his full attention (2) building a bigger and more lavish house
for him than for God.
Never forget: All our choices are connected. Each one leads to the next. Even things
we might deem as small can end up having a major impact on our lives.
I think it is all too easy to have a divided heart in the United States today. God has
blessed us financially. He has prospered us. Life is easy (compared to people around
the world). It is so easy to give God 50% of our heart or 75% of our heart. But God wants
all of our heart.
If you go back to 1 Kings 6 you can see God calling Solomon to give Him 100% but it
doesn’t seem that over the course of His life he did.
Questions for Thought:
1) Where do you see your heart divided when it comes to loving God?
2) How have you seen one choice lead to another in your life?
3) Are there any “small things” that you need to pay attention to now that will lead you
somewhere later?
We are called to love, follow, and honor God in every area of our lives. What would it
look like for you to give Him everything?
