1 Kings 5

Today's Passage: 1 Kings 5

We’ve all heard (and probably said) the phrase: “God doesn’t call the equipped; He equips the called.” Time and time again, I’ve seen God do this very thing in order that the glory may not rest on the individual, but on the God who provides.

Solomon recognizes the position he is in and knows that his clear next step as a leader is to fulfill God’s desire for a temple to be built (v. 5).

Look at all the ways in which God provided for Solomon for the temple to be constructed:

1.  Rest from war (v. 3-4)
David couldn’t start this project because Israel was constantly under attack during his reign. Solomon recognized that there was peace from God, allowing him to do what David wasn’t able to. God equipped Solomon with rest.

2.  Wisdom (v. 7)
Hiram had seen some stellar leaders in his time, so his ability to recognize the wisdom of Solomon is a testament to God’s purposes in appointing leadership. It’s really hard to biblically navigate through life without God’s help, which is why Solomon asked for it years ago. God equipped Solomon with wisdom.

3.  Supplies (v. 8-11)
A treaty was made, and these two kings continued to trade food for lumber for several years, each kingdom giving and receiving what they had and what they needed to survive. This isn’t a coincidence; for God knew the needs of each and used a pact between leaders to ensure everyone had what they needed. God equipped Solomon with materials.

4.  Manpower (v. 13-18)
The sheer number of able-bodied men is proof that God equips the called. This was no small task, and thankfully Israel was no small nation, so all that was needed for the stonecutting and lumber labor was provided by God’s hand through the sheer population of Israel and Tyre.
God equipped Solomon with manpower.

What is it that you’re needing God to do? Where do you need to be better equipped to serve and worship King Jesus? Do you trust that God will provide in the right ways and at the right time? Do you believe God can use even unusual circumstances to accomplish His plans?

God will equip you. Trust Him to provide. Pursue Him even when it’s hard and you’ll see God’s ability to come through!
