Revelation 18:11-14

Today’s Passage: Revelation 18:11-14

What do you desire more than anything else? What is the desire that drives your life?

All throughout the Bible God calls us to live for eternal things instead of temporary things. Some of these famous passages are...

[19] “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, [20] but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. [21] For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. // Matthew 6:19-21

[25] Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. // 1 Corinthians 9:25

[36] “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” [37] And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. // Matthew 22:36-37

There are more than this but what all of these passages challenge us in is to LIVE FOR THE RIGHT THINGS... To live for things that are worthy of living for... to fix our heart, mind and desires on life with Jesus in heaven.

That is what makes Revelation 18:11-14 sad and sobering to me. During the fall of Babylon the merchants weep and mourn because they can no longer make money. This was the driving desire of their life.

Later in verse 14 this is what is said about them...

[14] “The fruit for which your soul longed has gone from you...

The word LONGED means to LUST after. The chief desires of their souls was not God. And when the chief desires of our souls is not God... it is actually lust. It is idolatry. And they reaped the fruit of their life.

This is why we need to check our heart. We need to calibrate our heart. We need to correct our heart. God should be the chief desire. If He isn’t... Be honest with yourself. Confess to God today. Wake up tomorrow and love God the best you can.

[7] Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. // Galatians 6:7
