Revelation 16:17-21
Today's Passage: Revelation 16:17-21
In Revelation 16 we see the 7th bowl of God’s wrath poured out. This is the picture of how complete God’s judgment of sin will be.
God is not just cropping a picture. He is not cutting the sinful parts out of this world, God is completely taking sin on and He is the only one who can face it. When we stand before sin and brokenness, we fall every time, but God has chosen to perfectly and completely pour out His wrath.
This brings us hope because His wrath is a holy wrath. It is a wrath that intends not to destroy creation but to re-create creation. Every cruel power of this world, every evil influence will be broken apart at the sound of His voice.
When God declares “It is done!” we see that His plan has been fulfilled and sin and death’s grip has been destroyed forever.
When I read the declaration, “It is done!” I can not help but be reminded of when Jesus exclaims “It is finished” in John 19:30 as he hangs on the cross. Jesus cries out not in defeat but in victory.
The wrath that God pours out in chapter 16 shows us a glimpse into the wrath that Jesus faced on the cross. We deserve the wrath of God for our sin, but because of His mercy and grace, Jesus chose to take on that wrath for us.
Now, if we are in Christ, we do not need to fear the wrath of God, we can anticipate the wrath of God. Because we know that when God pours out His wrath that He will completely triumph over the evil of this world.
