Revelation 16:1-7
Today's Passage: Revelation 16:1-7
'Til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
I once heard of some people who wanted to remove the above lyrics from In Christ Alone. I think the point was that the wrath of God is not something that is easy to deal with or think about. But according to our passage of Scripture (and the full teaching of Scripture as a whole) the wrath of God is something that must be appeased. Why?
God hates sin. There is not much that God hates, but sin is one of them.
God takes sin seriously and so should we. We cannot pay for our own sin. We cannot appease the wrath of God in our own power. Thankfully, the cross of Christ is sufficient to pay for the wrath of God towards sin.
The wrath of God should not cause fear to Christians, because God’s wrath towards us has been perfectly and sufficiently paid for in Christ. But what it should do is help us in our pursuit of holiness. Pursuing holiness is not just about putting on godliness, although that is extremely important. But as we do this, we should also hate sin just like God does.

16 There are six things that the Lord hates,
seven that are an abomination to him:
17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a heart that devises wicked plans,
feet that make haste to run to evil,
19 a false witness who breathes out lies,
and one who sows discord among brothers. Proverbs 6:16-19
God takes sin seriously and so should we. We cannot pay for our own sin. We cannot appease the wrath of God in our own power. Thankfully, the cross of Christ is sufficient to pay for the wrath of God towards sin.
Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. Isaiah 53:10–11
