Revelation 2:18-29
Today’s Passage: Revelation 2:18-29
Of the seven churches that Jesus addresses, Thyatira is the smallest and as opposed to the other churches, the church did not suffer any significant political or religious persecution. The city of Thyatira was known as a center of business and trade.
When Jesus describes himself to the church at Thyatira He emphasizes His deity, judgment, purity, and steadfastness.
With Jesus’ fiery eyes, He sees them. Though they were a small church, they were not unknown to Jesus. He saw their works, and in a lot of ways they were doing well. They were known for their love, faith, service, and patient endurance.
But some of the church had allowed corruption to seep in. It seems like the woman referred to as Jezebel had claimed to be a prophetess and some had believed what she.
The Old Testament woman Jezebel was known for her evil as she tried to combine the worship of Israel with the worship of the idol Baal. Like Jezebel of the Old Testament, the Jezebel referred to here was attempting to lead the believers in this church away from the Lord and toward evil.
Jesus has given her time to repent. He shows her mercy in giving her an opportunity to turn from her sin, but He also expresses righteous judgment to punish her for her pursuit of sin and leading others to sin.
Not only does Jesus tell this church how He will bring justice, He also urges the church that they too must be on guard. He calls His disciples to be on guard against false prophets who lead us to sin, and to repent of how we have fallen into temptation.
Jesus is the one who searches the mind and the heart. He sees how we are lured by sin and he urges us to be on guard and to hold on to the truth. Just like the church of Thyatira, we must hold on to the love, faith, and service that is in Jesus Christ waiting with patient endurance for when He will come again.
