Revelation 2:1-7
Today’s Passage: Revelation 2:1-7
In the beginning of Revelation Jesus, through John, writes to the churches to correct them to turn back to fully following Jesus devotedly. It is interesting to see what Jesus says to each church. The church at Ephesus finds themselves in a scary position.
Jesus praises them for:
On the outside they were doing all the right things. They looked the part. But Jesus took a deeper look and He corrected their heart. He said, “You are doing all the right things. You are committed to being religious. But you have left me. You don’t love me the way you did at first.” What a scary place to be that we can find ourselves in in our churches and in our personal relationship with Jesus.
So Jesus corrects them. Look at what He says in verse 5.
5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. // Revelation 2:5a
He calls them to do THREE THINGS...
He tells them... You need to remember. Remember what? Remember what it was like to truly love God. Remember what it was like to feel His presence & walk daily with Him. Have you had a time in your life where you were spiritually at your best? Remember!
He then tells them to repent. To repent means to turn. He is calling them to turn back to fully following Jesus internally not just externally. To follow Jesus with their heart and not just their actions. To turn back to the relationship instead of mere religion. Where do you need to turn back? Repent?
Lastly He tells them they need to realign. They need to do the works they did at first. They need to walk with God again. Do you remember when you first placed your faith in Jesus? Do you remember how you lived? How you worshiped? Realign.
The church at Ephesus finds themselves in a scary place... a place we can find ourselves in. But the hope that we have is that we have a Savior who has open arms and we can turn back to Him.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. // 1 John 1:9
How do you need to remember? Repent? Realign? Where have you turned from your first love? We are on your team and here to help. Love you CPC!
