Philippians 4:10-23

Today's Passage: Philippians 4:10-23

What is the key to contentment in all situations? A question both believers and non-believers have a hard time answering. Our natural disposition is to be discontent with whatever we have. The more money we have the less it satisfies. The more time and freedom from work we have, the more it bores us. Even good and beautiful things, if misplaced in our hearts, can become dull and lead to discontentment.

Paul argues that the answer is not in the quantity or even the quality of the “things” themselves — it is Christ's possession and proper placement. This isn’t a pie chart where “Jesus” has the biggest wedge or He is our heart's majority stakeholder. Those assume that Jesus is just a part of our lives (even if it’s a major part).

Paul says, “I can do ALL THINGS” (v13) through Christ. God is not a part of Paul’s life, He IS Paul’s life. The key to contentment is allowing Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit to be the very lens through which we see and live life. The money you have (a lot or a little) is a gift from God and therefore a means to glorify God. Your home, car, job, family, and friends are all divinely supplied gifts from the Lord that are being used for your good and His glory.

Having Jesus as the foundation of our life frees us to live life to the fullest (John 10:10). He is the possession that our heart truly needs and wants, and until our hearts are satisfied by Him, we will never experience true contentment in life. With Christ, we will live in eternal peace knowing He is all that we need.
