Philippians 2:25-30

Today’s Passage: Philippians 2:25-30

There is a lot to take out of this passage today. Paul is convinced of the worth of Jesus (v.25-26). Paul talked about suffering being a part of the followers of Jesus’ life (v.29-30). But I want to zoom in on verse 27. This is a firm exhortation from Paul that encourages them to live their lives well for Jesus... no matter what.

27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, // Philippians 1:27

What did Paul encourage them to do?

1) Paul encouraged them to live a worthy life.

How does one live a worthy life of the gospel? You live like it is true. Worthy does not = perfect. There is not one of us that can live a perfect life but we can live a worthy life. A worthy life is all in. A worthy life lives with Jesus on the throne of their heart. A worthy life lives on purpose, actively seeking to follow Jesus every day of their life. The gospel is opposed to earning not effort.

2) Paul encouraged them to live a firm life.

He called them to stand firm. Life was going to get hard. There are ups and downs. It is not always popular to follow Jesus. We are in a spiritual war (Ephesians 6:10-18). But we are called to stand firm in Jesus with our eyes fixed on Him without wavering.

3) Paul called them to live a unified life.

Jesus, in John 17, talked about unity being one of the chief markers of followers of Jesus. Unity does not = uniformity but it means that we are on the same team. We are together. We are unified. Around what?

● The truth of Jesus.
● The gospel of Jesus.
● The mission of Jesus.

No matter how we are different, if we are are followers of Jesus, we can and should be unified on these things. And these things are the most important things about us.
Lastly Paul said to live this way no matter what (v.28-30).

How do you need to pursue worthiness this week? How do you need to stand firm where God has placed you? Where are you tempted to compromise? Where do you lack unity? How can you pursue that this week?
