Philippians 1:27-30

Today's Passage: Philippians 1:27-30

When Paul exhorts the Philippians to live lives in a manner worthy of the Gospel, he is calling them to live not as citizens of this world, but as citizens of God. Paul explains that he is going to check in on this church. They will be accountable to Paul, but more than that, they will be accountable to God for how they represent Christ.

What does it look like to live in a manner worthy of the gospel? We get a glimpse into that here when Paul describes his vision for the church standing firm in one spirit and one mind. The goal of this unity is not to avoid conflict or to seem like a happy family. No, the goal is much greater. The goal of the church is to strive toward the mission of the advancement of the gospel.

One of the most profound pictures of the gospel is the unified church. When the church is unified, it is focused on the mission and it is confident because of the salvation of the Lord.

The Lord’s salvation is sure and it is final. We contribute nothing to our salvation, and so, when we turn from our sin and choose to follow God there is nothing that can change our redeemed standing with God.

This confidence is necessary because suffering and persecution will be granted to us. Granted. Not by accident. We are given suffering so that we can bring God the most glory by living out dependence on God.
