Psalm 96
Today's Passage: Psalm 96
Psalm 96 focuses on what it means to truly worship the Lord as the ruler over all of creation. The psalmist depicts worship as both a command and a blessing. He divides the Psalm into three parts, each of which begins with a command.
The first command we see is to sing! All of the earth is commanded to sing a new song that blesses God and expresses the gospel. We see this “new song” referenced throughout scripture in Isaiah 42:10, Revelation 5:9 and many more places. Each time, this song describes a fresh response of praise in light of who God is. Our singing to God is not meant to be drudgery or routine but fueled by awe!
The second command we see is to “ascribe”. Some translations may say “give” but the heart of the word is the same: we must attribute to God the glory that is rightfully His. These verses also reiterate that every person is designed to know and worship the Lord.
The third command is to “say.” God designed every person on earth for a relationship with Him. The Lord our God is meant to reign over all of the earth and over each of our individual lives. When our lives are made up of worship of Him, that worship drives us to share who He is.
Why do we fulfill these commands? Because the world will be glad and the earth will rejoice when everyone sees that the only holy, true, and righteous king is on the throne.
