Psalm 81
Today's Passage: Psalm 81
In our passage, there is a call to worship (v. 1-3). The call to worship is because of verses 4-10, where the Psalmist recounts all that God had done for Israel. The Psalmist brings up the Patriarchs, Joseph, the Exodus, and God’s provision for His people. He even reminds them of what God said before He gave the 10 Commandments, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.”
But we see in verse 8, God’s plea for Israel, “O Israel, if you would but listen to me!” And verses 11-16 reveal the consequences for Israel’s unwillingness to listen to God.
Verses 11-16 remind me of Romans 1. Reread Psalm 81:12 and then read the passage below:
21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
Israel had the knowledge of God, but not the heart for God. They didn’t want to listen to Him. They worshiped other things, and so God gave them over to their impurity.
How well are you at listening to God? Jesus said in John 14:15: 15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” How we listen to God will show our commitment or lack thereof.
What has God been saying to you either through His Word or godly counsel in your life that you need to listen to?
