Psalm 74
Today's Passage: Psalm 74
The Bible is clear that God is mysterious.
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9 (ESV)
Sometimes things happen in life that don’t make sense to us, and if we’re honest, even frustrate or anger us.
And the tension for the believer obviously comes in the truth that the Bible teaches that God is both completely sovereign over all things, and that he is completely good in all things. This is easy to believe and feel in the peak moments of life, and equally hard to understand in the valleys of life.
In Psalm 74, the people of Israel are upset because the temple of God has been destroyed. They are upset that the name and glory of God is being mocked, and he is seemingly doing nothing about it.
9 We do not see our signs;
there is no longer any prophet,
and there is none among us who knows how long.
10 How long, O God, is the foe to scoff?
Is the enemy to revile your name forever?
11 Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand?
Take it from the fold of your garment and destroy them! Psalm 74:9-11 (ESV)
This Psalm is a record of the people imploring God to defend his cause.
God has and is defending his cause. He is using every circumstance strategically, even the ones that are hard to understand. No matter what has happened to you, is happening to you, or will happen to you, your hope does not rest in your circumstances, but in the finished work of Christ. He is our hope and our peace. He is how true justice has been ushered into the world.
