Psalm 73
Today’s Passage: Psalm 73
Psalm 73 is a Psalm of Asaph. He was a Levite in David’s court. As he wrote this he was looking at people, even sometimes himself, that lived for the wrong things. It echoes Psalm 37 where God reminds us not to be jealous of those living for the world, for they will fade. We can trust that God is just. We can trust that God is all satisfying. We can trust that God is worth our all.
The theme verse of Psalm 73 is found in verse 26. This is a GREAT TRUTH for us to cling to today: “My flesh and heart my fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.â€
Let me ask you, WHERE IS YOUR PORTION?
When the Bible talks about “your portion†it is talking about your hope, satisfaction;
your fill. Where is your portion?
If you are normal person, this is a fight for you. There are times you find your portion in things of the world (even good things). There are times that your portion is your marriage (or hope of marriage), your family, your job, money, success, etc. We have to be on guard. When we find our portion in things not God we forget that God is all we truly need.
Things can become idols - anything we place over God. And idols always pull us away from our relationship with God. They never propel us in our relationship with God.
So how do we maintain God as our portion?
If we don’t seek God continually with our whole heart God will not be our portion. We have to spend meaningful time with Him in His Word, talk to Him in prayer, and be intimately connected to His Church. This is God’s design.
Walking with God is a metaphor in the Bible for daily practical living. We have a relationship with God. We are called to invest in this relationship, follow Jesus, and walk the journey of the Christian life.
Asaph reminded himself of the utter need he had for God. This is true for all of us. Who we do we have but God? What do we need but God? He is our strength. He is our portion. It is good to be near to God.
Where do you need to realign your life today to walk with God the way God has called you to live? Is God truly your portion?

So how do we maintain God as our portion?
1) Seek after God with our whole heart (v.16-17)
If we don’t seek God continually with our whole heart God will not be our portion. We have to spend meaningful time with Him in His Word, talk to Him in prayer, and be intimately connected to His Church. This is God’s design.
2) Walk with God continually (v.23)
Walking with God is a metaphor in the Bible for daily practical living. We have a relationship with God. We are called to invest in this relationship, follow Jesus, and walk the journey of the Christian life.
3) Remember our need for God (v.23-28)
Asaph reminded himself of the utter need he had for God. This is true for all of us. Who we do we have but God? What do we need but God? He is our strength. He is our portion. It is good to be near to God.
