Psalm 71
Today's Passage: Psalm 71
Psalms has to be one of the most relatable books in the canon of Scripture. David is incredibly…human, and his human struggles are some of the best content for connecting with the Bible. How many of us have said at some point, “Me too, David. Me too?”
Psalm 71 is no different. It’s David’s own internal message that he constantly preaches to himself amidst hard times. Like us, David combats lies He faces about the character and nature of God with the truths that He knows to be reality. Let’s look at a few common lies and then contrast them with the truths David preaches to himself.
LIE: GOD IS NOT SAFE
We can be convinced that God is uncaring, apathetic toward us, distant, or even cruel at times, all of which produce an underlying current of “God isn’t safe.” If we don’t think we can fall back or depend on God as our stability, we need to remember what David said.
TRUTH: GOD IS ALL THAT IS SAFE
v. 1: In you do I take refuge
v. 3: Be to me a rock of refuge, to which I may continually come; for you are my rock and my fortress.
v. 5: For you, O LORD, are my hope, my trust…
v. 7: But you are my strong refuge
God is the only truly safe refuge to fall back on. More than spouse, money, or any other earthly rock, God alone is steadfast and strong.
LIE: THE WICKED WILL PREVAIL
It is incredibly easy to believe that those who do evil prosper, and that they always seem to get away with it. It often seems to be the case, alongside the notion that those who follow God seem to suffer the most.
TRUTH: GOD IS OMNISCIENT AND JUST
v. 4: Rescue me, O God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of the unjust and cruel man.
v. 13: May accusers be put to shame and consumed; with scorn and disgrace may they be covered who seek my hurt.
v. 20: You who have made me see many troubles and calamities will revive me again.
v. 24: ...for they have been put to shame and disappointed who sought to do me hurt.
The only way to combat lies is with truth, especially regarding who God is. What are some of the common lies you face, and how have you fought those with scripture?
Do you see any other lies David battles that He addresses in this Psalm?
