Psalm 69

Today's Passage: Psalm 69

David is accounted as one of the heroes of the faith. We know that he was sinful, but we also know that the Lord led him to repentance for his sin. David was an admirable king, but still there were many people who hated him without cause.

In many cases, David was lied to and betrayed. This probably tempted David to react harshly to satisfy the pride in his heart. However, in this Psalm we see David bring his burden to the Lord.

David finds comfort in describing his burden to the Lord and expressing just how desperately he needs the Lord’s help.

In verse 4, David says, “What I did not steal must I now restore?” In the next verse, David also admits that the Lord knows David’s sin better than he knows it himself. Even though David believes that he is facing injustice from his enemies, we can also see that because of his sin, he is not completely innocent. To some degree, David’s sin has played into the situation he faces.

Today however, we can read Psalm 69 and look to the only truly innocent one: Jesus. Jesus was afflicted on our behalf. He suffered the burden of lies and betrayal and the physical death on the cross in order to overcome our greatest enemy: sin and death.

Toward the end of the Psalm, David says “I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving. This will please the Lord more than an ox or a bull with horns and hoofs. When the humble see it they will be glad; you who seek God, let your hearts revive. For the Lord hears the needy and does not despise his own people who are prisoners.”

God has provided a perfect sacrifice for your sin. The only thing He requires of you is that you come to Him.
