Psalm 64

Today's Passage: Psalm 64

David was a man on the run for quite some time. Through the jealousy of King Saul, David got very acquainted with isolation, hiding, and the residual effect of being afraid. Can you relate to him in some way? People can be absolutely terrifying at times, and I’m sure we have all prayed prayers like David’s in Psalm 64.

To reassure himself, there are a few things David says to God in his fear that are really good medicine for the anxious soul.

1. I know God hears me.
“Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint…” (v. 1a)
David rests confident that even in complaint and even when no one else can see him, God sees him. What comfort we have in the omnipresence of God (He is at all places at all times)! It’s easy to convince yourself no one sees you in the dark, but God has eyes to always see us, and this is an incredibly hopeful thought. Even if there is no response, it doesn’t mean God isn’t listening.

2. I know God is for me.
“Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked, from the throng of evildoers. (v. 2)
“But God shoots arrows at them; they are wounded suddenly. They are brought to ruin with their own tongues turned against them; all who see them will wag their heads. Then all mankind fears; they tell what God has brought about and ponder what He has done.” (v. 7-8) Part of finding refuge in God is accompanied by the hope that He is the true defender. Even when it seems we are outnumbered or overpowered, David reminds us that God simply has to be Himself and will overcome even in the most dismal situations.

3. I know my job is to rejoice.
“Let the righteous one rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in him! (v. 10)
The proper response to a God like this is joy. Joy in His omnipresence. Joy in His power. Joy in His justice. Joy in His sovereignty. Even before all settled down and the pursuers stopped their pursuit, David found himself rejoicing in what He knew to currently be true about God. We don’t have to wait for the end result to praise; let’s rejoice DURING the hard times. This is what truly bring God honor and glory.

If you find yourself fearful because of man, let these truths sink deep into your soul and apply them to your heart. Whether or not you’ve seen the resolution; rejoice, nonetheless. God is a refuge and a defender of His own.
