Psalm 63

Today's Passage: Psalm 63

The Christian was meant for the Lord and the Lord for the Christian. In this Psalm, David speaks about the Lord like He is as vital to his life as water or food. God is not just a priority in David’s life, He is the very essence and substance of David’s life. What about the Lord is so important to David?

“Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you” (3). God’s love — steadfast, unmovable, relentless, unconditional, covenantal love is what truly satisfies David’s life. What about you and me? That same love is aimed at you and me, but do we find the same joy and fulfillment in it? Is God a piece of our lives, or is He the very essence and substance of our lives?

The temptation is to fill our lives/schedules with so many things that the pursuit of the Lord is virtually impossible. And many of those things are good, God-honoring things, like family, friends, career, hobbies, etc.. But here’s the truth — only when we see God, like David, as the very essence of our life, will all the other priorities of life find their true place and meaning. We will be better spouses, parents, employees, and friends when our hearts are earnestly seeking after the Lord — finding deep joy, life, and satisfaction from His steadfast love.

Today could be day one of that change for you! Or today could be the day that you ask the Lord to reignite this kind of passion for Him. Because if you’re like me, you’ve sought after the Lord before but slipped back into old habits and ruts. Remember, God’s love is steadfast, and He proved it by sending His son. So turn back to Him again today.
