Psalm 61

Today's Passage: Psalm 61
As we pick up Psalm 61, David is crying out to God. And notice, David feels far from God (v. 2), whether he is physically, spiritually, or emotionally, we do not know. But the weight that he is feeling is real.
We’ve all experienced this, and it can happen for a variety of reasons: mental health issues, consequences of sin, relationships, wars, stress at your job, death, etc. Sometimes we may look around and wonder where God might be.
In the midst of feeling far from God, David shows what we should do. We need to turn to God. David does 3 things:
1. David asks for protection. He knew that refuge would only be found in God. He turned to the source of protection.
2. David asks for dominion. David prays for the life of the King to be prolonged. He could be talking about himself, or he may be talking about the everlasting kingship that God promised him in 2 Samuel 7. For us, there is one King, and His name is Jesus. He is the one in control of all things. We need to trust His rule and reign. There is nothing too big in your life for God to handle.
3. David vows to praise. Even during difficult times, David wanted to glorify God. Typically when things are going wrong in our lives, we turn inward focus. We want people to throw us a pity party. But David takes his attention off himself and turns to God.
Is there anything weighing you down? Have you asked God for help? How does David’s response encourage you?
