Psalm 59
Today’s Passage: Psalm 59
Have you ever felt like the world is against you? Like people are out to get you?
Let me ask you, how do you respond in these times? What does it look like to pursue godliness in these scenarios?
This is one of those scenarios for David. The beginning of the Psalm gives us insight to what is going on: To the choirmaster: according to Do Not Destroy. A Miktam of David, when Saul sent men to watch his house in order to kill him. This story can be found in 1 Samuel 19:11-16.
So, how did David respond?
1) David cried out to God (v.1-7)
2) David trusted in God’s strength & power (v.8-9)
3) David lived in the love of God (v.10)
4) David reminded himself that God is his shield (v.11)
5) David looked to the holiness & sovereignty of God (v.12-15) 6) David directed his heart in worship to God (v.16-17)
Life is full of hardship. Sometimes there are people against you. Here is what we know. You can trust in the character of God. God is good. God is holy. God has your best in mind. You do not have to sit there and defend yourself. You do not have to plot revenge. You can trust your well being and trust judgment to God.
“14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” // Romans 12:14-21
33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” // John 16:33
Take out your journal. How has God shown you He is worthy of your trust? That He has your back? Write it down.
