Psalm 57

Today's Passage: Psalm 57

When life is rough, one of the hardest things to remember is that tough times are temporary. That’s something we must preach to ourselves throughout storms because we are prone to believe it will last forever. Storms always pass.

In Psalm 57, David is doing the same thing. He is reminding himself that troubles are temporary by holding the truth of the eternal nature of God up next to the temporary nature of his struggles. Check it out:

v. 4: My soul is in the midst of lions; I lie down amid fiery beasts – the children of man, whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords.
v. 6: They set a snare for my steps. They dug a pit in my way.

BUT!

v. 3: God will send out his steadfast love and his faithfulness.
v. 6: …but they have fallen into it themselves
v. 10: For your steadfast love is great to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds.

And what is David’s response to an eternally steadfast God in the midst of troubling times?

v. 5: Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth. (acknowledgement of God’s supremacy)
v. 7: My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast. (courage and trust)
v. 9: I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples, I will sing praises to you among the nations. (worship)

Tough times are temporary, especially in light of an eternally good God. So, what should you do if this is your current situation? Let verse 1 give you some insight:

1. Ask God for mercy and grace. He is happy to give it to you (Hebrews 4:16)
2. Take refuge in God. There is no other place of solace like the character of God.

The storm of destruction will pass, David said. While it rages on, find refuge in the God who never changes.
