Psalm 49

Today's Passage: Psalm 49

Fear is a part of the human experience. We can fear man. We can fear failing. We can fear the unknown. Fear has often marked our lives. But when you really think about it, fear should not be a part of the rhythm of life for the Christian because we serve a God who knows everything, is in control, and is trustworthy.

Something that I have often thought about is if God is good, which He is. And if God is in control, which He is. Then God is supremely trustworthy.

God is GOOD + God is SOVEREIGN = God is FULLY TRUSTWORTHY

Yet, when (not if) we walk through the hardships of life it is so easy to lose this perspective and cower behind fear. Hardship is a part of life. It has often been said, “You are either in a storm leaving a storm, or about to go into a storm.” And that is so true. If you have lived any length of life you know this is true. It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor, high or low (v.2).

How do you handle the troubles of life? The last time you walked through a storm, how did you walk? How was your trust? And maybe the supreme question of Psalm 49 - why can I trust God no matter what I am walking through? (v.5)

I see three reasons that we can trust God no matter what we walk through. I would encourage you to go back and reread some of the surrounding verses of these points and think about how you have seen this to be true in your life.

1) GOD IS IN CONTROL IN THE CHAOS (V.5-8)
2) GOD SEES EVERYTHING (V.10-12)
3) GOD’S GRACE BRINGS THE RIGHT CONFIDENCE (V.13-15)

Why do we not have to fear in times of trouble? Because we know the character of our God. And He is worthy of our trust.
