1 John 1:1-4

Today's Passage: 1 John 1:1-4
The opening paragraph of John’s first letter harkens back to John chapter 1. He is pointing to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the truth of our witness, the urgency of our witness, and the joy of our witness.
The truth of our witness. John ensures his readers that this Jesus is the one, true, son of God. He has seen the Messiah firsthand and witnessed Christ’s life and power in his own life. If you’re reading this, it’s likely that you too have experienced the life and salvation that comes from Jesus. You know He has transformed you from the inside out and raised your soul from the dead. Does your witness and testimony reflect this reality? Our life should be the proof that the Gospel is true, powerful, and life-changing.
The urgency of our witness. John tells his readers that he is proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ to them so they too would fellowship with God. Without acceptance of the truth of the Gospel, we do not have fellowship with God, and without fellowship with God, we remain condemned for our sins. If we have truly experienced the true Gospel, then we should feel the urgency to invite others into that fellowship with God through Jesus Christ. There are souls all around us that would spend eternity in hell if Jesus were to return today. That should move us! Jesus is inviting sinners to come and experience His love and forgiveness, and that is good news worth sharing.
The joy of our witness. John tells his readers that bearing witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ completes his joy. In other words, without faithfully sharing the Gospel he would be missing out on something. We experience joy when we give a sibling a gift they truly enjoy, in a profoundly deeper sense, we experience joy when we tell others where they can find hope, forgiveness, and eternal life. On top of that, we experience the joy of knowing that we were obedient to our Lord’s great command. There should be joy in our witness!
Compare John’s opening paragraph to your faith - do you live like Jesus is the true son of God? Is there urgency in your witness? Do you tell others about where they can experience life, joy, and salvation?
