Judges 5

Today's Passage: Judges 5
Following the victory of the Israelites, we see Deborah and Barak singing a song of deliverance. The overwhelming theme of this song is gratefulness that the Lord had brought them victory and joy that they had been used by the Lord.
They begin the song by celebrating the leadership of Israel. In the time of the Judges when each person did what was right in their own eyes, there was very little unity amongst the people. During this time, the people were characterized by an unwillingness to follow the Lord.
The people needed leaders who were faithful to the Lord to lead them to faithfully follow the Lord. But in order for leaders to lead well, the people also needed to be willing to be led.
In both leading and following, a humble heart is required. In both you are required to submit your own plans and expectations to the Lord and the leadership He has placed you under.
“Bless the LORD!”
This humility is only possible through the work of the Holy Spirit in your heart. God alone is the one who appoints and demotes leaders. He is the the Lord of all things and He has the authority to unify people for His purposes.
In the Enduring Word Commentary by David Guzik he says, “We can think of the relation between leader and people as that of the conductor and the orchestra. The conductor must lead, and the orchestra must be ready and willing to follow the conductor’s leadership. When the conductor does his job and the orchestra does their job, then beautiful music is made.”
Ultimately God is in control of all things, but He chooses to use His people, and when we are faithfully obedient to what He has called us to He is most glorified and we are most satisfied!
