Judges 3

Today's Passage: Judges 3

Judges 3:1-6 concludes the basic introduction of the book, in which the author writes of the testing and apostasy of Israel.

4 They were for the testing of Israel, to know whether Israel would obey the commandments of the Lord, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

The rest of chapter 3, and onward to chapter 16, “includes the stories of 12 judges raised up to deliver Israel from successive crises and to “judge” Israel. Their primary function was military in nature. Most judges failed to point people convincingly to the Lord. Indeed, in some cases the judges themselves were not exemplary (e.g., Gideon, Jephthah, Samson).” (ESV Study Bible)

Today’s judges include: Othniel, Ehud, and Shamgar. The first two sections of these three judges include the opening statement of which you will become very familiar with in the book of Judges: “And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD…” (v. 7, 12)

On repeat, this cycle presents itself:

The people sin > God judges > God raises up a deliverer…

And on and on and on we go.

I want to zero in on one verse for us to chew on today:

“7 And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. They forgot the LORD their God and served the Baals and the Asheroth.”

Why is reading your Bible important? Why is weekly worship with your church important? Because we are prone to forget God and serve other things. Maybe not the Baals and the Asheroth. No, actually the gods of today might be much more subtle. You might forget God and serve work, money, distraction, approval of others, pleasure, you fill in the bank.

Regular time with God is not necessarily the only way to fight sin, but I don’t know a single growing Christian who is healthy and growing apart from God’s Word.

So, make sure regular time with God in his Word and prayer is a steady rhythm in your life.
