Joshua 18

Today's Passage: Joshua 18
Chapter eighteen describes the allotments of land that were divided among the tribes of Israel. It is a pretty cut-and-dry chapter, but it helps tell the larger story of God’s faithfulness and provision for the Hebrews.
Joshua 18:3 (ESV): How long will you put off going in to take possession of the land, which the Lord, the God of your fathers, has given you?
Joshua challenges the people on their complacency. God has blessed their hand and given them victory at each battle in the promised land. They had conquered a lot of land and reaped many spoils, and all that success had made them comfortable. Comfortable enough to be stagnant and not process the rest of their land/inheritance.
One of the biggest faith killers is comfortability. When things are going well. When our finances are in the black. When the family is healthy. When the blessings are flowing…we begin to slack in the spiritual disciplines and worship the gift rather than the giver.
In these moments of comfortability, our greatest need is humility. When we stop and recognize that “every good and perfect gift” comes from God, then we will be drawn back to His presence (James 1:17). Sometimes we need that gentle kick to push us back into faithful obedience. That’s the beauty of Gospel community. We open God’s Word together, help one another process it, and apply it to our lives.
What parts of your life are you prone to get comfortable/complacent?
How would you rate your humility?
