Joshua 7

Today’s Passage: Joshua 7

We are continuing in the book of Joshua today. We just read about the mountaintop of the victory at Jericho. And today we are going to read about the valley of Achan’s sin.

SIN ALWAYS PROMISES TO TAKE A LITTLE BUT ALWAYS TAKES A LOT.

This is the theme today. Sin always promises to take a little but always takes a lot. We like to minimize sin and its consequences. It is just _________. It will just be _________. It won’t be that big of a deal. Nothing will really happen. I do it. You do it. We do it. It is a result of loving sin over God. It is a result of our sin nature.

This was true in the life of Achan. They conquered Jericho and God was very clear: Devote all of it to destruction. Keep yourselves from the things devoted to destruction. And put in the treasury of God all the silver, gold, bronze, and iron (Joshua 6:18-20).

But I can just imagine. They have been wandering the wilderness in tents. They have been eating manna that God let fall from Heaven. They go into this city. It is advanced. There are lots of luxuries that they have not been around. Achan knows that he isn’t supposed to indulge. That to do so would be against God’s commands and not honor Him. But he can’t help himself. And as he processes, he starts to justify. “It won’t be that big of a deal.” “It’s just one piece.” “What is the worst that could happen?”

SIN ALWAYS PROMISES TO TAKE A LITTLE BUT ALWAYS TAKES A LOT.

Then comes Joshua 7. And we see the consequences of sin. We see just how much sin cost Achan and Israel. We see how much sin took.

1) SIN TOOK THEIR BLESSING (V.1-5)

All blessing is a result of God and His grace but there is no doubt that God does not bless disobedience. We see this here. They suffered defeat.

2) SIN TOOK GOD’S GLORY (V.6-9)
3) SIN TOOK THEIR JOY (V.10)
4) SIN TOOK HIS LIFE (V.10-26)

It is easy to read this passage and question God... to say that seems harsh. A few thoughts for us in this:

● God gave explicit commands... they were broken.
● God laid out the consequences... He followed through.
● God is not just loving... God is also just.
● All sin leads to death... that is why we need a savior.

The truth of the matter is. I deserve, you deserve, to die for our sin. But Jesus died in our place. He took our sin. He bore the wrath of God. So that we can have a right relationship with God.

What sin do you run to? How do you minimize sin like Achan? Repent of it today. Turn it back over to God.
