Joshua 5

Today's Passage: Joshua 5

I once heard the story of a mom preparing to cook a roast for a family gathering. Per usual, she cut the edge of the roast off and tossed it in the trash. One of her curious children asked her why she disposed of a decently good chunk of meat. Her reply was, “I don’t know why. My mom did it, and her mom did it. I guess it’s just tradition.” Upon doing some backstory digging, this mom found out the reason her distant relative started the tradition is simply because her pot wasn’t big enough to hold the whole roast. Not the problem for the mom today at all; she just didn’t know why the tradition stood in the first place.

Things get lost throughout generations.

They did for Israel too. The Abrahamic covenant of circumcision, tangible evidence of God’s covenant with His people, had been lost in the 40 years of wandering throughout the wilderness. God wanted to remind His people of His faithfulness by covenant and commanded Joshua to have all males circumcised.

Scripture explains why: (v. 4-7)
• All the circumcised men of Israel died between the Exodus and this point.
• Nobody born during the Exodus had been circumcised.
• They were walking in disobedience to the Abrahamic covenant.
• God reinstated the covenant in order to fulfill His promise to deliver them.

May we never forget what God has done. May we never forget His faithfulness, even in long seasons of wandering. May we ever keep before us a reminder that God makes and keeps covenants, and we should obey this God who is trustworthy and true. May we always remember why we serve the Living God: because He is faithful and will always be!

Don’t let His character and power fade with time. Keep it alive in your conversations and in your heart. The next generation is depending on you to tell them why you serve the God you serve. So, my question to you today is, what will you tell them? Take a minute and consider this question, and then go tell someone today how faithful God has been to you!
