Joshua 4

Today's Passage: Joshua 4

Joshua 4:3 “And command them, saying, ‘Take twelve stones from here out of the midst of the Jordan, from the very place where the priests’ feet stood firmly, and bring them over with you and lay them down in the place where you lodge tonight.’” (ESV)

Life is full of significant events. There are monumental moments in our physical lives, like birthdays, weddings, and funerals. And there are monumental moments in our spiritual lives too. These moments shape us, change us, and make us who we are today.

The Israelite people are in the middle of one of those moments in chapter 4, and God instructs them to set up a monument. Not an idol for them to worship, but a physical sign that made them recall the mighty hand of the Lord to deliver them. Something that made people stop and pay attention. Something that made them ask, “What does this mean?” So that they would have the opportunity to share their story of God’s salvation.

God was working back then, and He is still at work in your life. If you’re reading this, God has certainly stepped into your life in significant ways. He has saved you - from your sin and your old self. He has justified you and is transforming you day by day into His image.

These are general terms, but take a second and think of the specific ways He has moved in your life. Think through the past couple of years - how has God answered prayer, given you peace, or provided for your needs? In reality, we are quick to forget all of the wondrous works of the Lord in life. Our eyes quickly move to the next problem. This is why God instructs Joshua to make a monument.

What monuments do you need to make in your life? Physical signs that point you and others to the works of the Lord. Because you need to pause and remember what He has done for you, but they are for others as well. Your story is a testimony to the coming generations that the Lord can save, redeem, and save to the uttermost!
