Joshua 1

Today's Passage: Joshua 1

Joshua continues the narrative story of the people of Israel entering the promised land.

The ESV Study Bible says,

“Joshua recounts part two of God’s grandest work of redemption in the OT period. In part one (the Pentateuch), under the leadership of Moses, the Lord redeemed his people out of bondage in Egypt and formalized his covenantal love for them at Sinai. Now in part two, under the leadership of Joshua, the Lord as divine Warrior brings his people into the Land of Promise and gives them ‘rest.’”

God used Moses to accomplish great things, and he will use Joshua to accomplish great things as well. Here’s what is consistent about both eras of leadership: (1) both men were sinful and flawed and in need of God’s mercy and grace, and (2) it was always more about God than it was about their own personal leadership.

All that being said, I imagine Joshua still felt the pressure of leading God’s people AND the pressure of following a leader like Moses. God knew this too, which is why he brings encouragement through a reminder into Joshua’s life.

5 No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you. 6 Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them. 7 Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. 8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

Maybe you’re feeling the pressure of leadership or maybe just the pressure of life. You’re not Moses and you’re not Joshua, but you are someone that God loves, and you do have reason to be strong and courageous. Trust that God is with you and grow in your reliance on him no matter what you’re going through.
