Deuteronomy 25

Today's Passage: Deuteronomy 25
On the surface, Deuteronomy 25 is an admittedly challenging chapter to know what to do with as a 2024 Christian. At times it can be hard to know what to do with these different rules that don’t necessarily fall under the category of moral law that is still applicable in the New Covenant (like the 10 Commandments for example).
But there are 2 New Testament examples and teachings that relate to things mentioned in our passage today, that at the very least should help you appreciate the unity of the Bible.
The apostle Paul talks of getting this type of treatment on behalf of Christ in 2 Corinthians 11:24 — “Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one.”
Notice the irony of Paul receiving these lashes for the sake of Christ! May we have this gospel boldness as well!
Then, in verses 5-10, there is discussion about what happens to a wife when her husband dies, and that it is the responsibility of the husband’s brother to marry the widow. Jesus addresses this in light of eternity in Luke 20:27-40:
The Bible is a beautiful, unified story about the glory of Jesus. May you be drawn to know and love God’s Word more and more!

But there are 2 New Testament examples and teachings that relate to things mentioned in our passage today, that at the very least should help you appreciate the unity of the Bible.
““If there is a dispute between men and they come into court and the judges decide between them, acquitting the innocent and condemning the guilty, 2 then if the guilty man deserves to be beaten, the judge shall cause him to lie down and be beaten in his presence with a number of stripes in proportion to his offense. 3 Forty stripes may be given him, but not more, lest, if one should go on to beat him with more stripes than these, your brother be degraded in your sight.” (verses 1-3)
27 There came to him some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, 28 and they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died without children. 30 And the second 31 and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died. 32 Afterward the woman also died. 33 In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife.”
34 And Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, 35 but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, 36 for they cannot die anymore, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. 37 But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. 38 Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to him.” 39 Then some of the scribes answered, “Teacher, you have spoken well.” 40 For they no longer dared to ask him any question.
The Bible is a beautiful, unified story about the glory of Jesus. May you be drawn to know and love God’s Word more and more!
