Deuteronomy 24

Today’s Passage: Deuteronomy 24
God’s character matters. God’s character informs all He is & all He does. God’s
character informs His words, His actions, and in the case of Deuteronomy 24... His laws.
It is so easy to gloss over chapters of lists of laws. These laws were to specific people in
specific times in a specific culture. God is teaching them how to be in relationship
with Him and with others. But what these laws show us is they show us more of God’s
heart and God’s character. God is the same today. He does not change. His character is
the same. And through these laws we learn about how we are to reflect God as image
bearers.
So, what do these laws show us about who God is & what God values?
1) God values marriage between one man & one woman for one lifetime (v.1-4)- Jesus
explained this more in Matthew 19.
2) God values the family (v.5)
3) God values life (v.6)
4) God values honesty (v.7)
5) God values purity (v.8)
6) God values grace (v.10-13)
7) God values people (v.14-15)
8) God values ownership (v.16)
9) God values people (v.17-18)
10) God values generosity (v.19-22)
These laws flow directly out of who God is. He is holy. He is good. He is powerful. He is
gracious. He is merciful. He is kind. He is trustworthy. He worthy... and so much more.
You will notice many of the laws ended with “You shall remember that you were a
slave in the land of Egypt, therefore I command that you do this.”
The reason that God said that is what He has done for them should FUEL them to do
the same for others. It is the same for us as followers of Jesus. What has Jesus done for
us? How can we do the same for others? As the moon reflects the sun we are to
reflect Jesus to the world. His grace should motivate our life.
