Deuteronomy 22:13-30

Today's Passage: Deuteronomy 22:13-30
This is a touchy subject in today’s culture, especially when an unbelieving culture is attempting to make sense of a biblical worldview regarding sexual purity. Here, God instructs Israel on how to navigate through a very real and extremely volatile topic. Although I can’t make full sense of it all in this Jumpstart, here are a few things we need to remember:
Is there currently sexual sin in your life? Are you sexually active outside the context of marital covenant, either with someone else or even in the privacy of your own home/thought life? Please see the weight of this sin and do not excuse it as human nature. It needs to stop and find it’s death so that Christ will be exalted in our bodies.

1. Sexual immorality of any kind is a big deal. Society, and even the church in some ways, has tried to downplay the damage of sexual sin. The hard part is, making light of it or saying nothing at all is only making things worse. Sexual sin has always been a major influence on human nature, and God (from the beginning) has set clear boundaries on how to rightly view it. No matter what kind or who it involves, all sexual activity outside of marriage is sin. THAT is a big deal.
2. God has every right to punish this severely for sin. We scoff as if stoning someone to death was an overreaction to a common human problem. However, all sin is punishable by death, or at least it should be. God is not obligated to release the consequences of sin just because we don’t think He should. In fact, God’s holiness demands justice. The only reason we aren’t punished for it now is because of the grace of this same just God in Christ Jesus. But make no mistake, just because we aren’t held accountable for it now doesn’t mean we won’t be in the end.
3. God is for the protection of women. I love God’s heart in this text regarding the mistreatment of women. Whether it be false accusation and abuse from a husband or rape, God shows affection towards women who in this time and space weren’t given much appeal from the court system. Here, we see God standing up for abused women, and we should too. Yes, punishment for the crime (as goes for all of us), but mercy on those who were unfairly mistreated. The Bible can get a bad reputation for its treatment of women at times, but if you look deep enough, you’ll see God’s intense heart for the female gender and her protection.
