Deuteronomy 22:1-12

Today's Passage: Deuteronomy 22:1-12

Chapter 22 covers several different Old Testament Laws concerning life for the Israelite people. Many of these are very confusing and strange to us today. Christ has come to fulfill the Old Testament Law and those who believe in Him now follow the Law of Christ, rather than the Law of Moses. Some of those laws overlap (the 10 commandments) and others don’t (don’t wear blended fabrics), and this is not the time and place to distinguish those - BUT the heart/motivation behind the laws in the text are still important for us today.

If you want more information on the Law of Moses and the Law of Christ/why we don’t follow all the Old Testament Law, check out this article.

Let’s take the Law given in verses 1-4. That is not a literal Law for us to follow today, but the principle behind it is found in following Jesus. Loving and serving others and treating them how we would want to be treated. This is how Jesus treated us.

We can now follow the example of Jesus, who followed this Law to the fullest in laying down His life for ours. The King of Kings served us poor and helpless sinners and now we have the opportunity to model Christ in our service toward others.

In many ways, the Law of Christ has raised the stakes of this Mosaic Law. It cost Jesus dearly to save us. Are we willing to serve and love others to the point of self-sacrifice? We should be. Anything that we might give up in this life came from the Lord who calls us to serve. What could we give up that he could not graciously resupply?

The other laws in this chapter are equally as important, even though they may be odd to us today. They teach us about God’s desire for our hearts. We should be good stewards of God’s creation, nature, and the land we cultivate. We should be honest and forthright in our homes, marriages, and in all our endeavors. Why? Because they reflect and honor our God! Because how we live reflects our love for Him.

Matthew 22:37–40

[37] And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. [38] This is the great and first commandment. [39] And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. [40] On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” (ESV)
