Deuteronomy 18

Today’s Passage: Deuteronomy 18
“When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not
learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations.” / Deuteronomy 18:9
How have we left God and turned to the world? I know this is a command directly
to the Israelites as they come into the promised land. But how have we done this as a
people? We are called to be separate. We are called to be holy. We are called to live our
days for Him. But it is so easy for us to compromise. How is this true in your life?
We are called to be “blameless” (v.13). It is so easy just to fold into the world. But as
followers of Jesus we are called to be different. This is one reason why God raises up
leaders in our lives to direct us back to God.
Meditate on your life recently. What are you worshiping? What are you living for?
Where have you compromised? Pray and talk to God about it.
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love
of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and
the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.
17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of
God abides forever. / 1 John 2:15-17
14 Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has
righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? 15 What
accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an
unbeliever? 16 What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the
temple of the living God; as God said, “I will make my dwelling among them and
walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
17 Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord,
and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you, 18 and I will be a father to you,
and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.” Since we have
these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and
spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God. / 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1
Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore
whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. / James
