Deuteronomy 13

Today's Passage: Deuteronomy 13

The crux of chapter 13 can be found in verses 3-4:

3 For the LORD your God is testing you, to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. 4 You shall walk after the LORD your God and fear him and keep his commandments and obey his voice, and you shall serve him and hold fast to him.

Chapter 13 is all about idolatry and what it looks like to be faithful in its midst. Why does God allow us to come face to face with idolatry? Verse 3 above tells us that it is because God is testing us.

Why does God test us? The ESV Study Bible says, “The Lord is testing faithfulness to himself by allowing false prophets to appear among his people. The warning is that fulfilled signs and wonders can be deceptive, and when accompanied by false teaching, they are not from the Lord.”

Got Questions tells us, “In both the Old and New Testaments, the words translated “test” mean “to prove by trial.” Therefore, when God tests His children, His purpose is to prove that our faith is real. Not that God needs to prove it to Himself since He knows all things, but He is proving to us that our faith is real, that we are truly His children, and that no trial will overcome our faith.”

God is wanting to “purge the evil from your midst.” (v. 5) God tests us to make us more like Christ. Lean into these trials and testing and take them to the Lord.
