Deuteronomy 5

Today's Passage: Deuteronomy 5

“Oh, that they would always have hearts like this, they they might fear me and obey all my commands!” Deut 5:29

Moses starts and ends the Ten Commandments with a reminder of God’s power and presence. He reminds the people of what God did for them -  freeing them from slavery in Egypt. He reminds them of the multiple kings and kingdoms that were destroyed by God’s mighty hand through their exodus journey. God was with them; protecting and providing for them.

God’s people are quick to forget all the mighty deeds He has done. We are so focused on the here and now, that we lose sight of the lifetime of faithfulness. Obedience to God’s Word is much easier when we pause to consider what He has done - sparing no expense to free us from our slavery to sin.

Moses ends the Ten Commandments with another history lesson, but this time he focuses on WHO God is. He reminds them of the time the Lord spoke to the Israelites at the base of the mountain. The glory of the Lord was so great and terrifying that they begged Moses to stop. The manifest glory of the Lord was too powerful for them to withstand, so they asked God to communicate to them through Moses. Moses is reminding them that the same holy, majestic, and all-powerful God that spoke to them at the mountain was now speaking to them through His Word. Moses reminds them to treat the Word of God with the same awe and obedience as His manifest glory.

This is the situation we find ourselves in today. We have not seen God’s glory face to face on the mountain. We have not seen the resurrected Lord Jesus in all his beauty. So faith enters the equation. The same God whose voice appeared in a blazing fire and earthquakes is speaking to us through the Bible. The same God who conquered sin, death, and the devil is calling us to believe and obey His Word in faith.

So if we possess faith in the Lord. That He alone is the one true God. And if we possess eyes that can see His mighty deeds from generation to generation, then let us pursue His commandments with zeal and joy! Not out of obligation, but out of joyful exaltation.
