Deuteronomy 4:1-14

Today's Passage: Deuteronomy 4:1-14
Our verses today center on obedience. Let’s focus on a few verses and reflect on the truths and implications for our lives.
Obedience requires diligence and discipline.
This is not meant to put the focus of our obedience on ourselves and our own efforts primarily. We shouldn’t seek to obey God so that we look better or feel better about ourselves—we should seek to obey God because God is worthy of our obedience.
But neither is obedience a passive act—we are responsible for our actions, thoughts, desires and emotions. We must submit all of these to God through his help.
Verse 9 says that you must, “keep your soul diligently.” Why?
Prone to forget…
“[L]est you forget…” We are prone to forget—God, the gospel, our position, our identity, the list could go on and on. This is one of the reasons that daily time spent with God in the Bible and prayer is so important.
We don’t naturally default towards godliness and gospel-centeredness. It’s a daily discipline to remind ourselves of the gospel and its implications for our lives. That’s why I regularly re-read through the small book, A Gospel Primer by Milton Vincent, and often recommend it to people I disciple or meet with.
We must pass our faith on to the next generation.
What does it look like to take verse 10 seriously?
If you’re a parent, what does family discipleship/worship look like in your family? If you don’t have kids, what does it look like to invest in the next generation, either through friends or through your local church?

9 “Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children— 10 how on the day that you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, the LORD said to me, ‘Gather the people to me, that I may let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children so.’ (Deut. 4:9-10 ESV)
